When you come to Texas this is this is the kind of rock music you expect to hear. Dallas, Texas-based band Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights return to SXSW this year armed with a fresh set of southern-tinged rock jams that are ready to be heard on your modern rock radio airwaves, but are more reminiscent of what was heard back when the likes of Skynyrd and ZZ Top were on top of the charts.
I have to admit, not many rock bands have excited me lately, but I did a double-take when I heard Karnivool. These Australians have crafted a complex sound of epic beauty and grinding intensity – they’re not afraid to explore new sounds and bend the rules of the genre as Ian Kenny’s masterful voice guides you along a journey with surprises around every corner.
The Lighthouse and The Whaler released their first recorded music in early 2009; their EP “A Whisper, A Clamour” received buzz from several publications. Their track “The Field Song” was featured on the March/April Paste Magazine compilation album. Also, Filter Magazine gave their approval of the band by naming The Lighthouse and The Whaler the “undiscovered band of the month” in July 2009. 2010 looks to be another big year for the up-and-coming trio.

I first ran into Jukebox the Ghost two years ago at CMJ in NYC. It was one of those, “Hey you should meet this guy, he’s got this great act he manages.”
Sometimes those are good intentions gone wrong, we’ve all been there – for instance the “let’s please that cute something we met and go see their favorite band,” scenario comes to mind.
But I can genuinely say in this case that Jukebox the Ghost put on …
One show that I am super excited about is The Static Jacks SXSW 2010 premiere. This band comprised of nineteen and twenty-something guys from New Jersey will get on the stage and perform like they have been rocking the stages for decades. There is some true talent and professionalism with this group…if you don’t believe me, check out some of their recent press.
I advise you to check out the band at their SXSW 2010 showcase at Emo’s (Inside) …
One of my favorite Hip Hop crews is taking the idea of “going to Austin” to a whole different level. Not only are they rocking SXSW 2010 but the Orlando superheros are actually taking up residence in Austin for the entire month of March. If there are two words that one could use to describe Solillaquists of Sound one would be dope, and the second would be unorthodox. I have been a hip hop fan for over 25 years and …
Indie pop icons – Metric- will contribute to the soundtrack for the upcoming feature length film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
The film is based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel Scott Pilgrim Volume 1 “Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life”.
For the soundtrack the likes of Beck, Broken Social Scene, Spoon, Neko Case, Be Your Own Pet, and recent addition Metric, were curated by Radiohead/Beck producer Nigel Godrich. Beck will contribute the music for the band Sex Bob-omb, the country-oriented …
There are so few words capable of capturing how good Andy McKee is at guitar. He is possibly one of the best living acoustic guitarists, and yet somehow relatively unknown. Despite receiving over 28 million views on his youtube video “Drifting”, the Topeka, Kansas native is still under the radar. I discovered him a few years ago, searching for a decent version of Toto’s “Africa,” and was delighted to see Andy’s acoustic arrangement.
Andy McKee is simply a …
Mumford and Sons played the sold out Bowery Ballroom with Freelance Whales last Thursday. If Mumford is coming anywhere near you in the next few months, buy early. The $12 tickets were going for over $100 day of the show.
If you haven’t heard of Mumford and Sons by now, you should get yourself in gear. The London-based foursome might be this year’s best new act (despite making serious moves last year). Their album, Sigh No More, just came …
