For 15 years the fellas over at Duck Down Records have been grinding away and bringing the world some of the best Independent Hip-Hop and to celebrate their 15th Anniversary they are bringing nearly the whole damn roster to Austin with them to party at SXSW.
To set off the 15 year milestone, Duck Down will be throwing a huge party on March 19th at 8PM at The Scoot Inn (1308 East 4th Street, Austin, TX)

The people who recently falsely reported that Panasonic was discontinuing their Technics 1200 line of turntables because most DJ’s were turning away from music on wax and toward digital products clearly didn’t consult the good folks at Stones Throw or catch wind about their upcoming SXSW 2010 event “45 Live”
I got my first copy of the Blue Scholars album “Bayani” when one of the groups I was working with back in 2007 brought it home with them from a tour stop in Seattle. That record has consistently for 3+ years found its way onto my iPod, or into my car stereo at least once a month. These guys are the epitome of what I love about hip hop. Part poetry, part political, part party – and beats that make me want to move my ass.
Last fall, Blue Scholars linked up with NYC’s Duck Down Records to release “Bayani, Redux” and have been steadily grinding. In a world of AutoTune and flash-in-the-pan singles, Blue Scholars represents everything that is right about hip hop, and brings that with them to an amazing live show. Blue Scholars is on my must-see list for SXSW 2010.

For a lot of folks out there, Das Racist probably begins and ends with 2008’s internet buzz around the track “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell” (watch the video here). And there probably aren’t many groups out there that are quite as polarizing as Das Racist. People think either these dudes are genius or absolute crap.
Das Racist is one of the few hip hop groups that are performing at this year’s SXSW Festival I haven’t yet seen and I have to say I am personally trying to decide if I’m a hater or a fan. I guess I’m writing about them – that has to count for something. Right? That being said, one has to wonder if Das Racist translate beyond Williamsburg and one novelty video. But hell, it’s a group that lists Sonya Sotomayor among its musical influences, and that makes me want to like Das Racist a lot.

Eyedea & Abilities – The Echoplex, February 11th
Eyedea & Abilities, in my case I needed a primer on to gain a real sense of him and where my expectations were to lie, but going into the show relatively blind is what its about nowadays, and I’m always up for it.
The duo, consisting of an MC, Eydea, and a DJ, Abilities, hit the stage at about 11: 45 pm. As things go I’m pretty new to Eyedea and have known about …

Detroit (or as the almighty Hex Murda refers to it, DIEtroit) has been “next” in the rap game for a hot minute.
There are so many hot cats coming out of that scene that, trying to get any Hip Hop attention and being from anywhere else in Michigan, you would probably have to hire an airplane flying a banner saying “Rich Rodriguez is a fraud – please buy my record.”
While detroit has been making waves, One Be …

A Gil Scott-Heron release is an event to be lauded and explored, for this review I will try to move away from my knee jerk reaction for the former and attempt the latter.
Gil’s latest release I’m New Here, released on independent label XL Recordings and produced by label owner Richard Russell is a well crafted work. The creative influence from the owner of perhaps the dopest label around is clearly apparent on “The Crutch” and “Your Soul And Mine.”
This is …
