Glassjaw at The Mayan Nov 11th 2009

Glassjaw fans have been waiting years for a show like last nights to finally happen.  Goldenvoice presented the one and only, Glassjaw, at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 11th.  I walked into the venue at around 10 pm and was in awe to what I saw.  A three level venue, all structured like a Mayan temple, with historic panels on the walls and ceilings was illuminated with a dark ruby red light.  The feeling inside the venue was eerie, and my friend looked over at me and we said to each other at the same time “this place has to be haunted”.  On the walls, old posters remained from the 1930’s when the Temptations headlined.  As I looked around, I found the entire venue packed to the brim like sardines with kids anxiously awaiting for Rx Bandits to finish up and Glassjaw to take the stage.

10:15pm rolls around and the band takes the stage.  Keeping things very simplistic and minimal, Glassjaw members were standing in a circle around their instruments, all facing each other.  A sunshine colored yellow light illuminated them, and without an introduction or any words from lead singer Daryl Palumbo, the band starts off one of the most intense and energetic sets I have seen in a long time.  The crowd went absolutely wild.
As Daryl sang and screamed out, there was so much energy flowing out of him that his body was moving in convulsions… shaking and twisting around, unsure of what form to take.  Some of the songs performed during their hour and twenty minute set include: “Pretty Lush”, “Siberian Kiss”, “Two Tabs of Mescaline”, “The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports”, “Ape Dos Mil”, “Pink Roses”, “Cosmopolitan Blood Loss”, “Mu Empire”, “Tip Your Bartender” just to name a few.

Kids were constantly crowd surfing.  Daryl was back and forth between his circle of musicians and the tip of the stage egging the crowd on.  And overall, I can safely assume that every fan that attended that show last night was well beyond satisfied with the performance they received.  Glassjaw may not still be around and touring and making their name known, but their fan base has undoubtedly remained alive and loyal.
