We here at LP33 are feeling a little nostalgic this week, so for today’s Baker’s Dozen, we thought it might be fun to take a look back at the decade that introduced us to Britney Spears, Pogs and Rollerblades…you guessed it: the 90s.

So bust out your Dr. Martens and put on your favorite flannel as we look back at the greatest music videos from the 1990s.

Right Said Fred – I’m Too Sexy

I think it’s appropriate to start a top 13 list with the greatest song ever written about the trials of being a supermodel.Though they claim it’s a tongue-in-cheek jab at vanity in the modeling industry, one can’t help but think they’re serious after watching their music video.

Backstreet Boys – I Want It That Way

In the 90s, boy bands were serious business. So serious, in fact, that they could make music videos of themselves singing super-serious love ballads in front of their private jet. Case in point: “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys

*NSYNC – I Want You Back

Before Justin Timberlake brought sexy back, he was dancing like a mad-man on CGI spaceships with the other four members of *NSYNC. Harmonization? Yes. Gelled-out hair? You bet. Synchronized dance moves? Absolutely.

Weezer – Buddy Holly

Where would we be today without nerd rock? Frankly, I don’t want to know. Weezer’s style made it cool to be geeky, and even made the 50s seem cooler. In their video for “Buddy Holly,” Weezer takes on Happy Days in an awesome way…

TLC – Waterfalls

TLC’s “Waterfalls” is another super-serious song with an equally serious music video. Without a doubt, “Waterfalls” is one of the greatest music video achievements of the 1990s.

No Doubt – Don’t Speak

Keeping with the theme of serious music videos, I give you No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak.” The song itself is about the end of the romantic relationship between Gwen Stefani and one of her and members. The video documents the collapse of their relationship and is also chock-full of slow motion drama.

Britney Spears – …Baby One More Time

Back in the day, 1998 to be exact, Britney Spears was best-known for being a cute and innocent Mouseketeer. Well that all changed with the release of her video for “…Baby One More Time.” With hindsight this video seems a little tame by Britney’s standards, but it’s still fun to watch.

Christina Aguilera – Genie In A Bottle

In the beginning there was Britney, and soon thereafter there was Christina, and it was good. Christina Aguilera boasted a killer voice and a bangin’ bod in much the same way Britney Spears did, so of course everybody liked it. Her video for “Genie In A Bottle” has a late-night beach-party theme filled with plenty of fireside dancing and flirtatious glancing.

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit

What would a 90s list be without Nirvana? “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is an all-around awesome song with an all-around awesome music video. I can’t help but bang my head as I watch some high schoolers cause mayhem…90s style!

Eminem – My Name Is

Eminem clearly wanted to prove to the world that he was not anything like Vanilla Ice. Some might say he took it too far, but one thing’s for sure: Eminem made an awesome music video with “My Name Is.”

Beastie Boys – Sabotage

Over the years, the Beastie Boys have proven themselves to be masters of the music video. In their video for “Sabotage,” the Beastie Boys don mustaches and aviators to create a mini-movie unlike any other.

David Hasselhoff – Hooked On A Feeling

Awesome is the only word I can think of to describe this masterpiece by David Hasselhoff. Thank you 1990s…thank you.

Jamiroquai – Virtual Insanity

It’s hard to believe that something as simple as a conveyer-belt floor hadn’t been used to such an awesome extent before Jamiroquai came along. The dance moves he busts out in this one are simply awesome, and his big fuzzy hat is pretty cool too.

On the list of some of the coolest shit I've seen in a while. A lot of these minimalist interpretations of movies and books have been popping up quite a bit in the last year, but this is the first I've seen done for iconic music videos. You can thank Federico Mancosu.

Great part about these posters is the credit given to the director for making these videos stand out in our minds, its not just the musician(s) creating the indelible mark these videos have left on our minds.

Featuring Michael Jackson's Thriller, Beastie Boys' Sabotage, and Beck's Devil's Haircut to name a few. You can snag these sweet prints at ImageKind.com

Every so often we come across a non-music story that we think you’ll like, and this is one of those times.

Two stars from Guy Ritchie’s hit movie Snatch, twins Nicola and Teena Collins got behind the camera to create this multi-award winning documentary about real life English Gangsters – think the real Soprano’s, but UK style.

Nicola and Teena were the hapless twin daughters of gangster Mike Reid in the 2000 movie Snatch. For this hard hitting documentary Nicola gets behind the camera to interview her real Dad, gangster Les Falco and his friends including bank robber Victor Dark, debt collector Micky Goldtooth and infamous bare knuckle fighter Roy Shaw.

As we meet the guys and learn of their childhood, living in poverty in the East End of London you help but think they seem to have thought things through pretty reasonably. They’ve got a strong loyalty to one another and they just seemed to be trying for a better life for themselves and their families. Ultimately you’ve got to also think about what they aren;t saying and make you’re own judgements.

The movie doesn’t seek to glorify or villainize these men, simply to let them tell their own stories, in their own words. Each man has paid his debt to society multiple times, with the characters themselves admitting crime does not pay.

Beautifully shot in grainy black and white, Nicola Collins seems a far more experienced film director than just having made this, her debut film. It seems Film Critics agree as this documentary won 5 prestigious awards.

The End- British Gangsters is available September 1st on VOD including; AT&T, Charter, Verizon, DIRECTV VOD, DISH Network IPVOD, RCN, Insight, Mediacom, Bresnan, Suddenlink, Sony Playstation Amazon VOD, Best Buy/Cinemanow VOD, Blockbuster On Demand Today, iTunes.

For those who have still yet to hear of Warner Drive they are a ROCK band, they are a METAL and a PUNK band and even a hint of the Beach Boys thrown in. Most of all they are great perfomers with great songs.

The guys have been around for a while, but things are hotting up for them after recently been signed by Interscope Records. They announced that they’ve pretty much finished the new album and even premiered a new song, the never heard before K.G.O. which rocked the Viper Room almost as much as their 2006, ‘1 Night at the Viper Room’.

The crowd were going wild for them, and whilst all the band have a lot of charisma and a lot of rock attitude, its Jonny Law who’s the undisputed star. He’s a Rock Star like you expect them to be, lithe, posing, strutting his stuff and commanding the stage as well as hanging off the edge of it.

Definitely a band to see if you want a good night out and with their new label deal I’m sure you’ll be hearing and seeing a lot of these guys in 2011..

Not being a big fan of Kid Cudi before tonight, I was surprised to witness some of the songs he put down in his set. Before tonight I didn’t realize how talented Cudi was in respect to his ability to not only lay down a solid hip hop track but to actually use beats that aren’t really prevalent in today’s hip hop – besides the shitty security guards and poor sounds I’d have to say this was my favorite show of the night.

My favorite track of the evening was “Man On The Moon” – a classic from his 2008 Mixtape A Kid Called Cudi. He involved the crowd in everything he was doing and at one point even jumped down into the press section just to give his fans an even closer look at him. Other songs he performed were “Embrace The Martian” and a new one he just wrote “Ghost”.

All in all it was a great performance by a great entertainer and I can definitely see how he has such a large dedicated following. To all Kid Cudi fans new and old all I can say after tonight is you’re going to have a hard time not “Embracing The Martian”.

Well I have to imagine it is hard to hold a crowd’s attention with a verifiable rock legend in Slash playing less than 100 feet away, and hip hop star Common performing just down the street, but generic rock band Transfer did little to engage their audience. With a small crowd, a combination of personal friends of the band, those just looking for a place to sit and those apparently unaware that Slash was playing just outside, Transfer did everything in their power to be forgettable.

Everything from their matching white suits (looking like waiters from Wolfgang Puck) to their repetitive chord progressions seemed inclined to make the band appear average. If they were athletes they would be the types playing not to lose as opposed to playing to win. There stage presence was a combination of rock stars posing, followed by self conscious looks away, apparently trying to avoid eye contact with anyone in the audience (it couldn’t have been hard).

After leaving the Key Club, I was next to the Main Stage where Slash was still in the beginning stages of his set. It took all, but 20 seconds for me to see the clear difference between Rock Stars and pretenders.

LA locals Steel Panther, aka Metal Skool, rocked the main stage this afternoon at Sunset Strip Music Fest. Deemed the “Best Tribute Band in the Universe”, it’s easy to see why these guys pack the house week after week. They have a very loyal following, playing shows Sunday nights in Vegas, and every Monday on the strip.

Dressed in their usual 80’s hair metal band outfits, they swayed back and forth singing covers ranging from GNR favorites to their version of the Backstreet Boys “I Want it That Way”. Unless you’re a total bore, it’s pretty impossible to not have fun at a Steel Panther show. I’m not a big fan of cover bands at all… Steel Panther being the only exception. The songs they cover are played note by note right on tune and right on point. They aren’t just musicians, they are actors and comedians putting on a show that will have you laughing your ass off while singing and dancing along.

They play into the whole rock star lifestyle with chat about groupies, lots of hair and makeup touch-ups, and drunk girls dancing around taking their tops off onstage. They may be half joking, but the ladies love these guys. They write their own material too, with naughty yet hilarious lyrics and classic rock guitar riffs. These pretty boys always get the crowd excited with their dirty humor and onstage antics.

To get a feel of what they are like, check out their music video to “Community Property”, it’s really a riot. Their latest record “Feel the Steel” is available now and they play every Monday night at the Key Club. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, their show is a must see!

The space is packed tight, sound checks, girls giggle over the group of punk rockers. They open in a flash and dive right into a high energy, fist pumping, head banging number. In fact, the head banging was syncopated and matched the drummers call. Very much a brotherhood band they really dig the the community vibe of SSMF , they expressed great gratitude for being in the SSMF festival for their second year and hope they can keep coming back. Lead vocalist, Skyler Nielsen, introduced a new member of the group, bassist Ryan Williams. The group apparently lives just a bottles throw away from the Cat Club. They performed a track titled Hurricane which was reminiscent of Korn vocals and Nirvana metal. Over-all a very very high energy band, Nielsen even ran into the audience with his guitar and playedout in the audience, they rocked the house!

Definitely a good band to see live. The front man brought out some nice operatic vocals to spice up the set. I appreciated that, you know, being the classy bitch that I am.
